What neuroscience can teach us about Emotional Wellbeing
The purpose of education is not to eliminate uncertainty. It is to help young people become better predictors of an uncertain world.
Introduction
Why do two children respond so differently to the same situation?
One appears calm and engaged. Another becomes overwhelmed, withdrawn or disruptive. It is tempting to assume one is simply making better choices than the other. Modern neuroscience suggests something different.
Our brains are not passive receivers of information. They are constantly predicting what is about to happen next.
Long before we consciously recognise what is happening around us, our brain has already begun estimating what it expects to see, hear and feel. Those predictions shape what we notice, how we interpret situations and, ultimately, how we respond.
This raises an important question.
What if Emotional Wellbeing is not simply about how a child feels today, but about the predictions they have learned to make about themselves, others and their future?
Understanding this changes the way we think about behaviour, relationships and support.
The Brain as a Prediction Machine
For many years the brain was often described as working rather like a camera.
Information comes in through our senses.
The brain processes it.
We respond.
Increasingly, research suggests something more dynamic.
Rather than waiting for information to arrive, the brain is constantly generating predictions about the world and comparing those predictions with incoming sensory information.
Instead of continually asking,
“What is happening?”
the brain is often asking,
“What do I expect is about to happen?”
Most of the time those predictions are accurate enough that we hardly notice them.
When reality matches expectation, very little needs to change.
When reality differs, the brain experiences what neuroscientists call a prediction error. It must decide whether to update its understanding of the world or explain away the new information so its existing expectations remain intact. This continuous process helps us navigate an uncertain world quickly. Rather than working everything out afresh each time, the brain relies on predictions and updates them only when needed. Many neuroscientists argue this predictive approach is also remarkably energy efficient and reflects a fundamental principle of how the brain has evolved and functions.
Children Learn More Than Knowledge
Every experience contributes to a child’s understanding of the world.
Over time, children develop expectations about:
- Whether they belong.
- Whether adults can be trusted.
- Whether effort leads to success.
- Whether challenges are manageable.
- Whether they are capable of overcoming setbacks.
Over time, repeated experience helps shape expectations about relationships, challenge, success and belonging. Viewed through a predictive-processing lens, these expectations can influence what children anticipate in similar situations.
A child who repeatedly experiences encouragement may begin to predict:
“When I face difficulty, I can find a way through it.”
Another who repeatedly experiences rejection or failure may predict:
“When things get difficult, I will probably fail.”
Neither prediction is necessarily conscious.
Yet both influence behaviour every day.
Looking Beneath Behaviour
Schools rarely see predictions.
They see behaviour.
When a pupil avoids challenge, withdraws socially or disengages from learning, it is easy to focus on what they are doing.
But behaviour often reflects what the child is predicting.
- Avoidance may reflect a prediction of failure.
- Withdrawal may reflect a prediction of rejection.
- Low motivation may reflect a prediction that effort will not make a difference.
If we focus only on behaviour, we risk responding to the symptom rather than the cause.
If we begin to understand the prediction beneath it, we can create experiences that help the child develop a different expectation.
Children do not simply respond to the world they live in.
They respond to the world they predict.
Why Change Can Be Difficult
If predictions shape behaviour, why do they not change more easily?
Previous experiences create expectations – often called priors in neuroscience – that influence how new experiences are interpreted.
A child who believes,
“I’m not good at maths.”
may achieve a strong result yet explain it away.
“I got lucky.”
“The test was easy.”
“The teacher helped me.”
The prediction survives because it already feels more believable than the new evidence.
This helps explain why lasting development is rarely achieved through a single intervention, lesson or assembly.
Deeply held predictions are unlikely to be replaced by isolated experiences.
They change when children repeatedly encounter experiences that consistently challenge what they previously expected.
Experience Changes Expectations
Neuroscientists describe this process as active inference.
When reality does not match our predictions, two things can happen.
We can update our prediction.
Or we can change our behaviour in ways that preserve what we already believe.
This helps explain why behaviour change is often difficult.
Information can help. But repeated experience often provides the stronger evidence needed to reshape deeply held expectations.
A pupil who expects rejection needs repeated experiences of acceptance.
A pupil who expects failure needs repeated opportunities to succeed.
A pupil who believes they do not belong needs repeated experiences of belonging.
Over time, these experiences provide evidence for a different prediction.
Behaviour changes not because a child has been told to think differently, but because they have experienced something different often enough for a new understanding to emerge. For practice this suggests a useful balance:
Predictable Enough to Feel Safe. Unpredictable Enough to Develop.
If the brain is fundamentally a prediction system, Emotional Wellbeing is not simply about feeling good.
It is about developing the confidence to navigate uncertainty.
Too much predictability can limit growth.
Too much unpredictability can lead to anxiety, withdrawal and self-protection.
Children develop best when relationships and environments are:
- predictable enough to feel safe
- unpredictable enough to develop
Safety provides the foundation for learning.
Challenge provides the opportunity for growth.
Without safety, the brain prioritises protection.
Without challenge, the brain has little reason to adapt.
This is why effective Emotional Wellbeing is not about removing all adversity. It is about creating environments where children experience enough support to explore, enough challenge to grow, and enough success to begin predicting a different future.
Every supportive relationship.
Every successful challenge.
Every experience of belonging.
Every opportunity to persevere.
These experiences create evidence.
Evidence challenges predictions.
Predictions shape behaviour.
Over time, new predictions emerge.
Why This Matters
Understanding prediction encourages a subtle but important shift.
Instead of asking,
“Why are they behaving like this?”
we begin asking,
“What might they be predicting right now?”
That shift moves us from judgement to curiosity.
From managing behaviour to understanding it.
From changing children to creating the experiences that help them build healthier expectations about themselves, others and the world.
Perhaps that is one of education’s greatest opportunities.
Not simply to transfer knowledge.
But to help young people build better predictions.

This Foundation draws particularly on the work of Professor Karl Friston, whose Free Energy Principle and Active Inference framework have helped reshape contemporary thinking about perception, learning and behaviour, alongside contributions from many other researchers.
These theories continue to develop and remain areas of active scientific debate. Motional uses them as frameworks for thinking about behaviour and Emotional Wellbeing, rather than as a complete or settled explanation of either.
