Motional

ABOUT MOTIONAL

Helping communities support Emotional Wellbeing so every young person can thrive.

Motional was created from a simple belief: meaningful support begins with meaningful understanding.

Every day, schools, trusts and organisations make important decisions about how best to support children and young people. Those decisions deserve more than assumptions, isolated concerns or incomplete information.

We created Motional to help make those decisions more informed, more consistent and more confident.

By combining evidence-informed insight with practical guidance, Motional helps practitioners better understand Emotional Wellbeing across individuals, groups and organisations – turning understanding into meaningful action.

Rather than replacing professional judgement, Motional exists to strengthen it.

Our Story

Why we created Motional

For many years, schools and the wider community have been expected to support increasingly complex emotional wellbeing and mental health needs, often without the time, tools or evidence needed to understand where support is most needed.

Too often, decisions are driven by isolated concerns, anecdotal evidence or whichever pupil is struggling most loudly at the time.

We all believed there should be a better way.

A way to understand Emotional Wellbeing across individuals, groups and organisations. A way to identify patterns before problems escalate. A way to give every member of staff the confidence to respond consistently.

Initially, we came to those conclusions independently -then fate intervened!

That belief became Motional.

What Drives Us

Everything we build is guided by a small number of principles:

Emotional Wellbeing can be understood

When we understand what drives behaviour, we can respond with greater confidence and compassion.

Early understanding changes outcomes

The earlier needs are recognised, the greater the opportunity to provide meaningful support.

Relationships matter

The quality of everyday relationships often has the greatest influence on wellbeing.

Evidence should strengthen professional judgement

Research has the greatest impact when it helps professionals make more informed decisions. Evidence should support reflection, guide practice and strengthen – never replace – professional judgement.

Everyone has a role

Supporting Emotional Wellbeing is not the responsibility of one person. It belongs to the whole organisation and,  ultimately, the whole community.

Insight should lead to action

Collecting information is only valuable when it helps improve experiences and outcomes.

Every child deserves to be understood.

Understanding should always come before judgement. We believe better questions lead to better support and better outcomes.

How We Think

Everything we create is informed by Motional Foundations of Emotional Wellbeing – our evolving collection of evidence, ideas and perspectives that shape our understanding of Emotional Wellbeing.

Drawing on neuroscience, psychology, child development, education and relational practice, it brings together complementary thinking from multiple disciplines to support more informed, compassionate and effective practice.

It informs the way we design Motional, develop guidance and activities, and continue learning alongside the schools and organisations we work with.

What We Build

We build practical tools that help schools and organisations:

  • Understand Emotional Wellbeing across individuals, groups and organisations.
  • Identify patterns and emerging needs.
  • Support consistent decision-making.
  • Plan meaningful action.
  • Review change over time.

Every insight is designed to strengthen understanding, not replace professional judgement.

Our Commitment

Understanding Emotional Wellbeing is never finished.

Neither are we.

Research evolves.

Schools evolve.

Children’s experiences evolve.

Our understanding should evolve too.

That’s why we continue to develop Motional alongside the schools and organisations who use it every day, combining emerging evidence with practical experience to ensure everything we create remains relevant, thoughtful and useful.

We’ll continue asking questions.

We’ll continue listening.

And we’ll continue building tools that help communities better understand and support Emotional Wellbeing.

Timeline

Looking back. Moving forward.

Every step in the development of Motional has been shaped by listening, learning and improving. Guided by research, informed by practice and refined through feedback from the organisations we work alongside, each milestone reflects our ongoing commitment to strengthening practice and helping organisations better understand Emotional Wellbeing.

  1. 2017

    Motional Founded

Motional founded in response to the growing need to provide more accessible tools and support for time-pressured educators to better support the Emotional Wellbeing & Mental Health of the young people in their care.

  2. Autumn 2023

    Organisational Snapshot

Schools can gather wellbeing feedback from leaders, teachers, governors and support staff in minutes — anonymously or shared. Results can then be filtered by role, question and domain to reveal where perspectives differ and where to focus next.

  3. Autumn 2023

    School Action Plan

Action Plans to turn emotional wellbeing insight into a clear school-wide plan, with expert-suggested actions or your own. Teams can assign tasks, add comments, upload evidence and track completion as work progresses.

  4. Spring 2025

    Neuro-affirming Descriptions

Ensuring Motional supports young People no matter where they are is an important founding principle of Motional.

But no matter where they are means much more than this! We mean no matter where they are in terms of their Neurotype!

We have been collaborating with specialist providers across the UK to adapt the “Always/Never” descriptors in Motional to better accommodate a wider range of neurotypes.

  5. Spring 2025

    Report Builder

The more powerful report builder is released. Allowing users to compile change-over-time graphs for all or any Participants, Groups, cohorts, key stages, or even the entire setting.

  6. Summer 2026

    Multi Session Program Activities

Program activities expanded to include activities built across multiple sessions.

Each activity follows the same practical, evidence-informed approach, helping consistently support and progress change.
