Understand Need
Move beyond assumptions and first impressions to understand the patterns, strengths and needs influencing behaviour
HOW MOTIONAL WORKS
Measure consistently. Understand deeply. Act confidently.
Every effective response begins with understanding.
Motional helps practitioners measure Emotional Wellbeing through a consistent, evidence-informed process that fits naturally into everyday practice. By capturing observations across a whole class, Motional provides immediate insight into collective wellbeing while automatically building detailed understanding of every learner and smaller groups – all through one consistent assessment process.
Grounded in affective neuroscience and designed to be neuro-affirming, Motional provides a shared foundation for understanding need before planning support, monitoring progress and evidencing impact.

For most settings, Motional begins with a class.
Practitioners respond to a series of evidence-informed statements for each learner using a simple Likert scale. As responses are recorded, Motional automatically creates a Groupshot for the class and an individual Snapshot for every participant – all through the same assessment process.
There is no separate class assessment or duplicate data entry. One assessment process provides immediate insight into the Emotional Wellbeing of the whole class while automatically creating an individual Snapshot for every learner. Practitioners can move seamlessly from understanding the needs of the class to exploring an individual learner’s profile or identifying pupils who may benefit from targeted intervention.
The same process can also be used with smaller groups or individual learners. Whether you’re measuring a whole class, reviewing an intervention group or supporting one child, the experience remains consistent and the results are directly comparable.
Practitioners can choose between Universal and Comprehensive measurement, allowing the depth of insight to match the purpose while using the same familiar process throughout.
Because the framework remains the same, Motional also translates naturally into specialist provision, social care, youth services and other community settings.

One process. Meaningful insight at every level.
Every learner experiences, expresses and responds to the world differently. Motional helps practitioners understand those differences without reducing children and young people to labels, behaviours or assumptions.
Built on established research in affective neuroscience, executive functioning and Theory of Mind, Motional provides a neuro-affirming framework for understanding Emotional Wellbeing before planning support. Rather than asking “What’s wrong?”, it encourages practitioners to consider “What might this learner be experiencing, and how can we respond?”
Every statement within Motional is supported by clear, evidence-informed descriptors that help practitioners interpret what they are observing. Rather than leaving responses open to interpretation, the descriptors provide practical guidance designed to reflect different neurotypes, developmental pathways and ways of experiencing the world, supporting more confident and consistent observations across practitioners.
This approach shifts the conversation from judgement to understanding. Emotional Wellbeing is recognised as dynamic, influenced by relationships, environment and lived experience. The result is more compassionate conversations, more consistent decision-making and support that reflects the individual rather than the behaviour alone.
Because every Snapshot and Groupshot is built on the same evidence-informed framework, practitioners develop a shared language for understanding Emotional Wellbeing across classrooms, teams and settings. The result is greater consistency, stronger collaboration and support that remains centred on the learner rather than the label.

Evidence-informed. Neuro-affirming. Designed for everyday practice.
Emotional Wellbeing should be understood as part of everyday practice, not as an additional task.
Motional is designed to become a simple, predictable routine for practitioners. Assessments use a straightforward Likert scale, supported by clear, evidence-informed descriptors that promote confident, consistent observations while minimising subjectivity.
For most mainstream settings, schools complete a Universal measure once each term, typically requiring around one hour per teacher, per term to assess an entire class. In specialist settings, practitioners often choose a Comprehensive measure once every half term, providing richer insight for learners with more complex or rapidly changing needs.
One assessment process automatically creates both a class Groupshot and an individual Snapshot for every learner, removing duplicate data entry and making Emotional Wellbeing part of an established routine rather than an additional responsibility.
Over time, that routine becomes increasingly valuable. As practitioners develop a shared understanding of learners’ needs, earlier identification, more consistent responses and improved emotional regulation reduce the need for reactive interventions, helping to ease workload rather than add to it.
Because the same evidence-informed framework is used throughout, Motional supports a continuous cycle of understanding, planning, review and improvement that grows with the needs of both learners and the setting.

A simple routine. Better understanding. Lasting impact.
You’ve seen how Motional helps schools measure Emotional Wellbeing through a consistent, evidence-informed and neuro-affirming approach that fits naturally into everyday practice.
Now discover how those insights help practitioners look beyond behaviour, recognise emotional patterns and identify where support will make the greatest difference.
